I have never cut a tree before. What will go wrong if we just do #1 but slanted?

Basically the same thing as with a straight cut. First, it will probably pinch your chainsaw bar because the tree is not going to just hover in the air while you're completing the cut. Second, it will move in an unpredictable direction because you don't really know where the exact center of mass of a tree is. Worse, if it makes contact with other trees on the way down, the log may shift randomly in any direction, hitting you.

Would definitely not advise anyone to cut a larger tree against its lean.
